Add url to directories
One
of the first steps in web site promotion is to add url to directories. This helps
to build and increase link popularity
as well as drive traffic to your site. Though traffic from directories may not
be substantial, they provide their database for use by other search engines. The
advantages in site submit to directories are:
- 1. increases link popularity.
- 2. increases web site traffic.
- 3. increases page rank.
- 4. increase in position on search engine result pages.
There are many directories, each with it's own rules and guidelines. Before submission to directories, it is advisable to read their guidelines properly. I have attempted to make submitting to directories easier for webmasters by listing some of the more important directories here. Some directories require paid submission, some are free and some require reciprocal links.
Also the their page rank (PR) as indicated by Google toolbar and alexa ranking as indicated by alexa toolbar are shown. Though these rankings change with time ,they provide some measure of a directory's importance. The PR and alexa rating are not constant.
Therefore, this page will be updated every 2 weeks. There will be indications of new PRs and alexa ratings as well as additions of new quality directories.
This list is by no means exhaustive. Webmasters can locate and submit to directorie, general or niche directories, by doing a search in the following ways.
- Do a search using general keyword of phrase relating to your site's theme. For example, "fashion" without the quotes. Good, niche directories are mostly likely to place at the top of the search engine result page.
- Do a search in the google directory for directories relating to your site theme. Results will show PR of sites that come up in the result page.
- Search your competitor's backlinks or sites that link to your competitors. Click to your competitor's sites and using the google toolbar display the sites backlinks. This gives you all the sites linking to your competitor. Some niche directories might be included.
- Type in altavista.com or google.com link:http://www.competitorsite.com .This will give you sites linking to your competitor. Hopely you will find niche directories that your competitor has gathered links from.
- While searching for directories using the alexa toolbar, it displays similar websites (directories) on the toolbar. So you can just click on the name of the displayed site to go to the directory.
