Keyword optimization for different types of keywords

 

There are different types and variations of keywords that you can do keyword optimization for.

  • There are singular and plural keywords.
  • There are words with different spellings. Example, color and colour.
  • There are variations of keyword phrases. Example, "affiliate program management" and "affiliate management program".
  • Competitive keywords and less competitive keywords.
These are important elements you must take into consideration when doing keyword optimization of your site. You can use the overture search term suggestion tool to do your keyword research. It gives the number of times a particular keyword or phrase has been searched in a month. It also gives alternative terms to a keyword or keyword phrase. Overture search term suggestion tool doesn't differentiate between singular and plural keywords. That is, the search count are same. However, singular and plural keywords will be ranked differently on search engines. Words with different spellings and variations will also be ranked differently.

So test and see which keywords are ranked higher and use these keywords to do keyword optimization. Or you can build several optimized pages for the different keywords. This means breaking your content pages into several separately optimized pages.

How do you handle competitive and less competitive keywords? If a keyword or keyword phrase is competitive, do keyword optimization on one page for just that one keyword. Place the keyword or keyword phrase into your content at the most important places on your page. That is, your title, headings, filename, metatags, links, first line of first paragraph e.t.c. however, for less competitive keywords, combine one, two or three keywords or keyword phrases.

The advantage in doing keyword optimization for competitive keywords this way, all other things being equal, is that the search engine will see your site as an authority for this keyword. However, you may not be ranked for keywords other than the optimized keyword.

Keyword optimization-where to put your keywords

When optimizing your page for your keywords, don't miss out the important places to put your keywords.
KEYWORDS IN THE TITLE.

Write a short title, not more than 65 characters. Between 6 and 9 words, with your keywords in it. Put your keywords in the beginning or near the beginning of your title. Do not repeat the keywords. Make the title as credible and eye catching as possible. Your title will appear as a link to your site on the search engine results pages (serps).

KEYWORDS IN THE DOMAIN NAME
Putting your keywords in your domain name adds some points to your search engine optimization efforts. Everytime you do a search, you will observe that some of the sites that come up on the first page of the serps have the keywords in their domain name. This is evidence that keywords in the domain name is important.

Use dash to separate keywords. Search engine spiders see a dash as space. For example, if your keywords are blue widgets. Use www.blue- widgets.com instead of www.bluewidgets.com .The search engine spider sees the first as blue widgets which are your keywords. But it sees the second as bluewidgets which does not make any sense as far as your keyword is concerned.

KEYWORDS IN THE FILENAME
For the same reason given above, the keywords should be used in the filename with dashes.
KEYWORDS IN THE META KEYWORD TAG
Put your keywords here. Combinations and variations of your keywords. Common misspellings too. Don't bother puting many keywords here. This tag has little importance to your search engine placement. Also do not include words that do not appear on the page. Do not repeat keywords more than three times otherwise it would be considered spamming the search engines. Separate keywords and keyword phrases with comma.
KEYWORDS IN YOUR META DESCRIPTION TAG
You have to craft your description very well because it is sometimes displayed with your title in the serps. Keep your description as targetted as possible. It is like writing a line or two summary of the page or site. Keep it between 20 to 30 words. Use your primary keywords near the beginning of the description. Do not use quotes or html or special characters.
KEYWORDS IN YOUR HEADINGS
When writing your H1....H6 headings, put your keywords in them. The heading is supposed to highlight the content that follows. So it is very important for the search engines. The heading tags are H1, H2,.....H6. H1 is the most important and H6 the least.
KEYWORDS IN YOUR PARAGRAPHS
Include your keyword or keyword phrase in the first sentence of the first paragraph and subsequent paragraphs. It adds relevance of your keywords to the content of that paragraph and the page as a whole. Also use your keywords in the text in the paragraph in such a way that it makes sense to a reader.
KEYWORDS IN TEXT LINK
Use your keywords in text links to other pages. Keywords in incoming links increase link popularity of your site. You can also bold keywords in the text of your paragraphs.
KEYWORDS AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR PAGE
Weave some of your keywords into the text at the bottom of your pages.

Now lets cap it by giving importance to this list. The most important is at the top.

  • keywords in the title.
  • keywords in the domain name.
  • keywords in the heading.
  • keywords in the first sentence of first paragraph.
  • keywords in the filename.
  • keywords in text link.
  • keywords in meta description.
  • keywords in meta keyword.
  • keywords at the bottom of page.

If you are using an exact phrase to optimize a page, example, "large brown widget". This page will be well ranked in the search engine result page, when that exact phrase is searched for, that is with the quotes. This means that there are not too many pages with the same phrase. But if a search is done without the quotes your page may not rank well if your link popularity is not good. Therefore, when you are involve in a highly competitive area and you have good inbound links optimize for exact two or three word phrase. And if you have optimize your page for an exact keyword phrase, and the phrase in well ranked then you need to increase link popularity. It will be just a matter of time before your ranking goes up.
