A keyword or keyword phrase is used to carry out search at the search engine. If you want to search for a particular item, product, article, topic, etc on the web, you have to use a keyword or keyword phrase that is related to that item or topic.

It therefore follows that before you build your site you should give considerable thought to the keywords with which surfers can find your site. In fact, your keyword research could make or break the visibility of your site at the search engines and the web as a whole.

You should start your keyword research after you have decided on the theme of your site. That is, what your site is about. What purpose does it serve. Of what benefit is it to your visitors.
  • Do a research for your keyword by using terms ( keywords ) that relate to your sites to search out sites with similar themes.
  • This similar theme sites will sometimes provide you with keywords in their meta keywords tags.
  • Also, frequently used words or groups of words throughout the site gives you the keywords for which the site has been optimized.
  • There are other places to look for these keywords. On the browser menu, click on view then source. The keywords are likely found in the filename. Title tags, meta keyword tags, meta description tags, headline text links etc.
One very important way to carry out your keyword research is using what is called a Search Term Suggestion Tool. Some of these tools are free while some are not.


These are some of the tools you can use. All you do is type in your keyword or keyword phrase and the tool will produce alternative terms. It also shows you how many times people have used these keywords in a previous month. The search term suggestion tools are good in discovering what people searched for. This gives you an idea of how competitive the keyword is. Generally, the greater the number of times surfers used a keyword, the more competitive that keyword is.

However, what you want is a keyword that is not too competitive and at the same time people are interested in. The free search term tools like that of overture provides the count for a previous month. You can go further, by using a paid service like Word tracker. In addition to the count for number of searches performed, it provides a keyword .... index. This is a sort of analysis of the demand and supply for a keyword. Demand means the number of searches performed using the keyword while supply means the number of websites that appear in the search engine result pages (SERPS) for the same keyword. This helps you to know what keywords you can use to optimize your site.

However, figures produced by these search term suggestion tools, whether free or paid, should not be taken in absolute terms. They should be used with care and in conjunction with your web site traffic stats.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT KEYWORD YOUR SITE RANKS FOR?

You have identified your keywords using the above-mentioned tools and strategies. You have optimized your site for the keywords. Your site has been indexed and listed on the search engines. But when you do a search on the search engines using your keywords you cannot find your site. Yet you have been getting some amount of traffic.

What do you do? check your site logs. You will see the keywords visitors are using to find your site. Use these keywords at these search engines and this will show you how you rank for them. You can then use these keywords to optimize your site.

In order to reduce the tedious task of searching your log files, you can use log analysis software. These software can automate the tasks of log analysis. They will show you what keywords are used to find your site and how you rank at the search engines. These softwares do not query the search engine so you don't have to worry about going against the terms of service of the search engines. One great software is;

If your webhosting package includes some tracking ability that can track referrers then you can easily know where your visitors are coming from and what keywords they are using.

You can also use a third party tracking service. An example is, Extreme Tracking. All you do is add some code to your site. This records your visitor traffic and sends the data back to their server. You can log in at their site and check your stats. To use their free version you will have to display their logo at your site. Clicking on the logo will display your stats. This means any visitor to your site can also click on the logo and see your stats.
