must start tracking your web site traffic statistics of your visitors or customers
as soon as you start getting visitors to your site. This means immediately you

How do you start your Tracking
Well, here comes the nitty gritty.
Most of the information you will get on your log files (WebServer logs) will have
to be arranged in some logical manner. So that you can make some meaning out of
them. Your WebServer will log all requests for files from your Website, whether they are whole pages, sound files, image files etc. A counter on your site will record this requests instantly for you. These requests are called hits. But these are not what you want. You may want to know visitors who are only interested in the whole of a particular page for example, or an ebook displayed at your site. How will you know this ? You will save this information (hits) in your Web Server log files and periodically transfer these data to database tables. You will then go through your data. Separating items such as:
- Name of visitors host
- Type of file requested
- Name of file requested
This brings us to the issue of counting/tracking your visitors. Three ways to do this are:
- Through visitors IP address
- Through membership login name and password.
- Through cookies.
The second method is more accurate. If your site or a section of it requires login by members using their username and password. This presents a more reliable way of knowing how members have logged in, in a day or week. However, the drawback in this is that, unless your site is a high content site with lots of valuable information most users would be reluctant to go through the log in process.
The third method of using cookies is also not very reliable. Cookies are programs stored on visitors' PC. They save pieces of information about a visitor's PC so that the server recognize the visitor whenever he or she requests information from the server. so if different people should use that same PC, it will show on your log sheets as one person. Also, if one person should use different machines, it will indicate as different persons. So this gives an inaccurate information about visitors. Also, users could set their browsers not to accept cookies.
In general, a combination of these three methods could be used to determine the number of visitors. And it is advisable to determine this number at short intervals of time. For example, daily or weekly. However, numbers arrived at will only be estimates. There are software programs which can process your log file on a daily basis.
